Brittany and camper vans – they simply go together to discover the authentic northwest of France free of all constraints without having to sacrifice comfort. Travelling through Brittany in a camper van offers views of magnificent landscapes and a good infrastructure without being too touristy. All in all, holidays in a camper van are a relaxed mode for single travellers, couples and families.
Tours
Those who travel to Brittany want to go to the sea. Although inner Brittany, with the wooded area of Brocéliande or the Monts d’Arrée, is more untouched by tourists and offers greater seclusion, this is more than understandable given the many highlights along the coast.
There are two tours for explorers. It is advisable, especially on a first holiday, not to take on too much, to take your time and let the impressions take effect.
The northern route starts in Rennes and leads from there to the coast of the English Channel to Saint-Malo, Dinard, Cancale and Dinan. Further west is the Côte de Granit Rose with Perros-Guirec at its heart. From there, it could continue to the Bay of Morlaix with the coastal towns of Carantec and Roscoff. A next possible stop is Brest and the crowning glory of such a discovery tour the Crozon peninsula in the far west.
Crozon can also be the destination of a tour along the southern coast of the Breton peninsula. This would start in Quimper, continue in Carnac and include the Quiberon peninsula. Concarneau would be a worthwhile stop, as would the former artists’ village of Pont-Aven. Before the Crozon turning point, a detour to the Pointe du Raz is not to be missed. Speaking of side trips: fantastic islands such as Ouessant, Île Groix or Île de Bréhat lie off the shore of mainland France in all directions.
Extended explorer holidays combine both routes and lead once along the coast from the northeast towards the west and then back to the southeast via Morbihan.
In the places described, which are never more than 2 motorhome hours apart, there is always a free campsite or an official pitch where it is wonderful to stop off.
Where May The Motorhome Be Parked?
Apart from campsites, motorhomes are generally allowed to park in the same way as cars in parking areas according to the road markings. Parking the camper in public areas to spend the night is not permitted. Neither are camping tables and chairs allowed to be placed on the street. The same applies outside built-up areas: Wild camping and tenting is prohibited by law. However, some municipalities have extended the possibilities for campers in the special holiday season 2020 to make holidays in Brittany possible at all.
If you find a secluded spot out of sight after a long day trip, it is permitted to spend the night there – as long as your stay at the chosen spot does not violate traffic regulations. And: The nature parks are taboo. If you move on the next day and take your rubbish with you, you’re not doing anything wrong.
Apps like Park4night help to find a camper van site, car park or rest area where the stay is definitely harmless.
Travel Guide For Holidays With A Motorhome
Those who travel by motorhome have a different perspective on things. Campers therefore need special travel guides. Author Rainer Höh has put together just such a camper van tour guide.
His travel guide describes more than 300 pitches and campsites in Brittany in detail. A total of 8 routes through the northwest, including GPS data for all waypoints, facilitate planning in advance and orientation for a stress-free holiday. Descriptions of walks and cycle tours in Brittany and a mini-dictionary of French terms for campers complete the guide.
